I retorikken finnes det en rekke språklige virkemidler vi kan bruke for å gjøre språket i teksten, talen eller fremføringen rikere, bedre, mer interessant, spennende og forståelig. Formålet med språklige virkemidler er å forsterke, klargjøre, gi kraft, skape positive eller negative assosiasjoner, eller å bedre forståelsen av et budskap.
Når dette er sagt må det samtidig legges til at språklige virkemidler må brukes med omhu, slik at teksten ikke blir tunglest og unaturlig. Riktig og veloverveid bruk av språklige virkemidler gjør ikke bare budskapet er klarer slik at det blir enklere å forstå det, men det gir også budskapet et mer profesjonelt preg.
